Kuksa is a type of drinking cup, traditionally crafted by the Sami people of northern Scandinavia. This simple cup is both beautiful and functional. The perfect cup for tea or coffee and a perfect gift for you or a loved one.

This class is an introduction to whittling. Throughout the course, you will be guided through the entire carving process, from selecting the right wood to reviewing the essential carving techniques. You will use traditional tools such as a carving knife, hook knife and a gouge. We will go over how to sharpen each tool and students are urged to practice the skill.
We will go over the following:

  • Introduction to the Kuksa Cup and whittling

  • Wood selection

  • Safety practices

  • Use of tools and whittling techniques

  • Sharpening and maintaining tools

  • Finishing techniques

By the end of the class, you will have a unique kuksa cup and spoon to take home, each crafted by your own hands, along with the skills and knowledge to continue carving on your own. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced carver, this class will deepen your connection to the craft and the natural materials you work with.
